Steve Reich takes centre stage at the opening night of Sónar 2011 in L’Auditori

Steve Reich is an influential musician for several generations, a pioneer of minimalism and described by The New York Times as "America's greatest living composer," and his work will be the star of the show at the Sónar 2011 inaugural concert in L'Auditori.

Reich redefined the direction of contemporary music in the sixties and seventies by laying the foundations of what we know today as the North American minimalist movement. In the words of the critic and writer Alex Ross: "On some days, as familiar shimmering patterns echo on the soundtracks of commercials and from the loudspeakers of dance clubs, it seems as though we are living in a world scored by Reich." His daring and enormous talent are highlighted in a work featuring the use of repetition as a means of expression of the highest order and a clear commitment to experimentation with new formats, such as the creation of tape loops and "phasing patterns," sonic patterns played simultaneously by two or instruments with slight time lags between them.

The concert will consist of two of Reich's most emblematic works, "Music for 18 Musicians" and "Sextet", performed by the instrumental group bcn216 with the vocal group Synergy Vocals.
